 Repeat Course Policy
Please note changes to the Repeat Policy effective Fall 2004:

1. A student is limited to 3 attempts of a course.  This includes repeats where they have earned a grade of A through E, or attempts where they were awarded grades of CR, NC, I, W, Z, or X.
2. This limitation does not apply to independent study and similar courses for which course content varies significantly with each offering or is a variable credit course.
3. For exceptions to this limitation policy, a student may appeal to the chairperson of the department offering the course.

To improve a grade previously earned at CMU, or elsewhere, a student may repeat any course except courses entitled Independent Study. The last grade and credits earned at CMU completely replace the previous grade and credit hours in computing the grade point average, although the earlier record remains a part of the student's transcript. A grade of A through E must be earned in a repeated course to replace the previous grade in computing the grade point average.

If a student repeats a course after he/she has earned a degree, it will not be considered a repeat. Both grades will be counted in the student's cumulative GPA.

For students repeating CMU courses at other colleges and earning higher grades, honor points and hours will not transfer, but the previous CMU honor points will be removed in computing the average. Students should check with the Undergraduate Academic Services Office (Warriner 123) to determine if a course taken at another school will count as a repeat of a course taken at CMU.
